Fast and Easy Way to Draw Complex Architecture
Daily drawing exercises let us work on particular drawing techniques, and specific subjects, without the overhead of finishing a large and complex drawing. This gothic spire atop Notre Dame in Paris is a great subject for applying the drawing technique of drawing the effect of detail, not to try and draw it accurately in detail. This technique has been the gateway to my drawing style development.

Why not have a go yourself with it. #sketch #stephentraversart #drawingtutorials #drawingvideo #artteachertips #drawingpract...

Its really interesting to me from the other point of view than most people who watch this, my drawings are always super detailed becasue i draw from detail to bigger picture not the other way around. I always start with doodling shapes that i think loog good and just ad more and more little shapes soo at the around mid point i have to decide "what is in this drawing" and i am always suprised what comed out of this. Its fascinating to see how other people think during the drawing process!

Day 22. Love towers 😊 wish I could draw them straight though! In my main drawing the first floor arches lean a bit, almost as though I need a guideline down the middle. I noted this in the pre draw and still couldn't draw it straight, not that the markers aren't in line. Anyhoo. I'm beginning to add more shade and texture now. Next reel I'll do a comparison.

Hello Stephen , thanks for the demo , I have a question if you like can you tell us along the video what changes you make in your drawing if compared to the reference as I saw that at the starting of the video the base part all I can see in the reference is pure white , a medium dark , and dark(all of them can be seen very distinguish ) but when you drew all If any were mixed Where I saw pure dark , you put vertical marks there and slightly darken some areas only I think thus is what you call the effect of detail , and I find it really hard to warp around when you say to "feel" the detail and effect just somehow I can't understand this term "effect" at all Or I can say that I am quite restricted in the types of marks that I currently have in my toolbox (maybe only line and hatch) as I mostly draw figures and vehicles In short i am drawing these sessions regularly but am not quite satisfied with the marks I make , a way too much dark in hatch and fauls to have harmony in the drawings Thank you Stephen , please continue with these sessions

Day 22. 4 min pre sketch and 13 min main sketch. Definitely like this process. I spent some time shading the dome. I like both of them, less scratchy lines. Not being a draftsperson I'm ok with the wonky. They do them and I'll do me. 😅

I tend lose track of the concepts that 1) I am not trying merely to produce a copy of a photo; and 2) I need to spend time planning how to use marks to make the drawing effectively represent the subject. Instead, I jump right into drawing and usually have to figure out where I went wrong. I’ll be watching this video again!

I have been learning productively and effectively. Thanks very much for confirming what ive just learnt. 😊

So if I could briefly summarize the flower drawing (that speaks in general to this): 1. Draw the fore-most objects (flowers). Use brief lines to imply the stems and pedals/buds. 2. In the darker area, put down hatching to darken the area, but also let the shadows help further translate some of the stems, pedals, and buds. Make sure you start with a "medium" amount of hatching separation, and fill in with darker or less cross hatching as needed. 3. From there, use further separation of hatching to imply lighter areas (but still in some shadow), and use less lines (or thinner lines) to define further objects. 4. Keep in mind the overall "sections" of a picture of details. Specifically, you need to preserve the "lighter" sections instead of just putting marks down. Each individual object is way less important than the collective of objects as a whole picture. As a note from me (and a question): Would it be best to take a step back and look at the original picture to best identify the lighter and darker areas, then draw a very rough "blob" reference picture without all the details? Perhaps the hardest thing to develop is what kinds of lines and density of thick/thin lines you choose to use for any given section? I imagine you have years of experience and know "This section looks about to be this level of darkness, with this level of texture, therefore I'll use this cross hating ensamble. Can you do a video where you show how to create different textures or techniques for different surfaces or effects? That would be cool.
